Agreed. I think it makes him look like a wizard out of a cartoon fairy tale or something similar. |

Detective Dee Talks to Animals
2009-07-10 14:25:33 Web Editor: Xie Tingting
Di Renjie, the Sherlock Holmes of ancient China, will soon be brought to life as someone with a magic power to talk to animals.
Hong Kong actor Andy Lau, who plays the lead role in Tsui Hark's new mystery film "Detective Dee", a fictional account of Di Renjie, said recently that his character has the special powers of ventriloquism and understanding animals.
But behind the scenes, Lau said it had been a grueling time trying to develop a chemistry with the monkeys and horses in the cast. The animals were selected from the safari park in Hangzhou, a city not far from the Hengdian World Studios where the film is being shot.
Di Renjie was one of the most celebrated officials of the Tang Dynasty (618-907 AD), during the reign of Empress Wu Zetian.
Traditionally, films about Di Renjie have focused on his skill in investigating crimes, but director Tsui Hark, who is known for his martial-arts films, also adds kung fu to Di's abilities. The director has invited veteran kung-fu choreographer Sammo Hung to be the film's action adviser.
"Detective Dee" also features Li Bingbing as Andy Lau's romantic interest, and Carina Lau as Empress Wu Zetian.
The film is slated to hit theaters in October next year.

| This film strikes me as one of those heavily cgi infused with fantasy element, most likely done in the typical artistic greenish filter. I am not saying the film won't turn out to be good but then we've seen that before and it's getting too redundant. I just hope I am wrong about this. |

20 July 2009
Directed by Tsui Hark, period detective film Detective Dee had completed half of its shooting in Hengdian, the crew revealed Andy Lau’s Di Ren Jie photographs, thus revealed the mystery part of this film. Earlier Sina dropped by Hengdian and managed to sneak into the shooting site, managed to take a photograph of Di Ren Jie holding a sword waiting to fight his enemy and the recently injured Tony Leung Kar Fai also spotted at the set.
The Sina team managed to get into the inn setup inside the Hengdian film studio, it was shooting a Di Ren Jie scene. Andy was standing at the “corridor” of the inn, sword in one hand, eyes looked sharp as though he was searching around. He was wearing a black long gown, a dark red belt on his waist, he had a mature and reliable “sheep” moustache, the only difference from the earlier released photographs was the hat that Andy was wearing, he was wearing a hat similar to the constable character in House of Flying Daggers.
It was said that Di Ren Jie had the chance to stop Wu Zhetian from becoming the Empress, but for the benefit of the citizen, he tried all means to help and protect Wu to become the Empress, this remind the Wu Ming in Hero whom gave up the chance to assassinate Emperor Qin Shiwang.
It is understand that the crew is currently shooting scenes of Andy, Tony and Carina Lau, shooting will be completed in early August.

Exclusive visit to Detective Dee shooting site
24 July 2009
The shooting of Detective Dee at Hengdian is coming to an end, but the shooting of several important scenes that involved the actors are ongoing. The “golden partners” Tsui Hark and Sumo Hung request high standards for every dialogues and movements in every scenes. The shooting crew had withstand the high temperature of 40 degree celsius, working for more than 18 hours each day. When the chance of a media visit to the shooting, reporters will seize the chance to get close to this “crazy” shooting crew and the “miracles”.
Li Bingbing whom had just finishing shooting a fighting scene met the reporters in a simple costume, the blush on her face had yet faded away. When talked about the fighting scenes, Li Bingbing became excited as she showed off her weapons which are sword and whip, she also shared her joy and sorrow when shooting fighting scenes. As the sword and whip are soft weapons, thus can easily hurt people, even with her experience of the whip in The Forbidden Kingdom, but she still suffered injuries as her swollen fingers on her right hand suffered 2 weeks ago yet to go down, she also fallen from the horse last week…but the joy of the fighting scenes cannot be experience elsewhere as the combination of dancing and kungfu is the most beautiful display.
When talked about collaborating with Andy Lau for the third time, Li Bingbing thanked Andy for the concern and help from him as Andy will demo to her personally in some action scenes by teaching her step by step, he also shared his previous shooting fighting scenes experience to her.
